What does the Economic
Stimulus Act mean to your business?
Incentives to make purchases in 2008 rather than waiting
until 2009
The Economic
Stimulus Act signed by President Bush in February promotes business
investments in 2008 by significantly expanding depreciation and
one-time expensing options for qualified capital expenditures.
This provides
significant incentives for organizations to buy technology platforms
and applications.
"If a
firm is contemplating a fairly large investment, there is a substantial
benefit to do it this year rather than next year," according to
Matthew Shapiro, a professor of economics at the University of
Michigan. He recommends companies examine their capital spending plan
on a multiyear basis to see if any purchase planned for 2009 should be
moved to 2008 in order to capitalize on the more generous tax
treatment.
Learn more
about the 50% Special Depreciation Allowance and Section 179
Expensing on the IRS website here.
Be certain to
consult with your tax advisor on the implications of the depreciation
allowance and the Section 179 expensing.

4 Telltale Signs Your Next
Customer Won't Pay By Jennifer Azara
Desperate times call for extra vigilance in order to
protect your company's resources.
It's not just employees with entitlement mentalities
helping themselves to extra pens and notepads you need to worry about.
External fraud is on the rise, thanks to - you guessed it - the bum
economy. Even if your company has never fallen victim to external
fraud, you'll want to fine tune your radar now, and encourage your
Finance staffers to do the same.
One key place to stay sharp: Accounts Receivable. Many
company cash flows are already getting crunched - the last thing you
want to do is fill an order you'll never get paid for!
Seeing one or more of these signs doesn't necessarily
mean someone's trying to pull a fast one at your company's expense. But
it is probably worth some additional investigation.

Meet Sherwood Systems:
Rebecca Brashear, Quality Assurance
Rebecca is another one of the "old-timers" at Sherwood
Systems, which might account for the many hats she wears. Her primary
role is to support, test and document our Sherwood products and GP
customizations. In addition, she also maintains the Sherwood website,
writes the quarterly newsletter, and sends out the weekly training
invitations.
Rebecca has been working in software development and
testing for over 20 years. Her first job out of college was
working for a start-up software company with a computerized food cost
tracking package. From there she went on to installing
software and training users in the moving and storage industry, and
then to a position as the Accounting Manager at a local moving
company.
Missing the 'excitement' of the computer industry,
Rebecca returned to software testing at a large legal software provider
in their new PC/Unix division. (She remembers getting her first
PC with a 40mg drive and wondering how she would ever fill it
up!) In this position she honed her quality assurance testing and
project management skills, working with a team of developers, testers
and product specialists.
After starting a family, Rebecca worked freelance for
awhile for small software companies doing software testing, end-user
training and user documentation. She worked at Sherwood as an
independent contractor for a few years, before becoming a full-fledged
employee 12 years ago. She's seen many changes at Sherwood,
including the transition from Unix-based to PC/network business systems.
The focus on the customer, and working with a great team of dedicated
individuals, are Rebecca's favorite aspects of her job.
Rebecca has a BA degree in Anthropology from ASU and a
few years of accounting classes from Phoenix College. When
not working, Rebecca enjoys spending time with her family, boating,
camping, skiing and travelling with her husband and teenage daughters.
